Our adventures

On this adventure, you will hike the historical route through the mountainous national park of Jotunheimen towards the beautiful fjords in the west.

On this adventure, you will trek the historical route in the National Park of Jotunheimen towards the beautiful fjords in the west. You will explore some of the most reknown, and beautiful mountain passages within the area. The hiking and trekking culture has been active in Norway for more than 150 years. During this tour, you will visit some of the most important places in Norwegian outdoor culture and follow trails established by the Norwegian Trekking Association

On day two on your adventure, you will hike on the famous Besseggen. According to the myths, the ridge was forged by Thor on the anvil of the earth. Besseggen is one of the most classic hikes in Norway, and the view towards the lake of Gjende's tourquoise waters is humbling and breath-taking. The Besseggen ridge itself is just a short part of about one kilometer of the complete 14 km long track, but it’s situated right in the middle of the tour. This trail is for confident hikers who are comfortable using their hands and feet in some scrambling terrain. The scrambling sections are a short part of Bessegen, however, it can feel a bit exposed. We encourage you to have experience in this type of terrain to join this trip, as the hike is commiting to get to our destination.

After your days in the National Park's mountains, your route heads towards where fjord meets mountains, to the famous Norwegian fjords in the west. First, you will hike on the Old King's Road from 1790, the first road used for horse transportation between eastern and western Norway. Today, it is a beautiful hike that takes you through fascinating architectural history and beautiful nature. On the next day, you experience the green and wild valley of Utladalen. In Utladalen, you will find old traditional Norwegian farms and the largest unregulated waterfall in all of Norway. With its 275 meters of free falling water, the sound and view of Avdalsfossen is an incredible natural wonder.

Our tour ends with one of Fjord Norway's most beautiful views. You will hike to the mountain Prest, one of the most beautiful viewpoints around Flåm before you leave with Flåmsbanen to Oslo or Bergen - one of the worlds most beautiful train journeys.

While hiking in a small and exclusive group of explorers, you will stay in the beautiful and traditional mountain lodges en route. Jotunheimen is the heart of hiking and alpine adventure tours in southern Norway. Later, you will stay in modern cabins and a beautiful hotel with a stunning fjord view. Your luggage will be transported in Jotunheimen while you hike.

We will travel like locals, and go on the public bus to Gjendesheim Mountain Lodge. During the day you will see large parts of the mountain areas in eastern Norway and the small local settlements within the area. At our accommodation Gjendesheim Mountain Lodge in the national park of Jotunheimen, you will be served dinner in the evening.

DAY 2: the legendary besseggen

Ask any Norwegian about today’s adventure - Besseggen, and they will know what hike and mountain area you will visit. Ever heard of the famous act Peer Gynt? Or it’s even more famous author, Henrik Ibsen? Ever since Henrik Ibsen released his piece in 1867, and probably even before that – the dramatically looking mountain ridge has been famous in all of Norway. It is a reason why the tour itself is one of Norway’s most popular hikes. The view from the ridge is simply stunning, and Besseggen is the area for some of the most beautiful nature pictures in Norway. Our night is spent at the traditional Memurubu Mountain Lodge.

DAY 3: fun hiking on bukkelægret

When most people stop at the end of Besseggen, our tour continues further into the national park. Today, you will be hiking the mountain Bukkelægret. Many people think the hike over Bukkelægeret is every bit as lovely as Besseggen. There are some short scrambling sections, but no more challenging than the day before. In general, it is an enjoyable hiking terrain. The area is known for a rich blooming of various mountain flowers, and the blue, almost eucalyptus coloured water creates a beautiful contrast to the mountain terrain. In the evening, you will be served dinner at Gjendebu Mountain Lodge. The oldest Mountain Lodge owned by the Norwegian Trekking Association, established in 1871.

Day 4: the inner parts of the national park

Today is our last day on the historic route through the national park of Jotunheimen. Keen hikers familiar with the area often refer to this part as the most beautiful. During the day, you will see the legendary cabin of Torfinnsbu. With no electricity or water, the simple cabin has been home for numerous climbers and adventurers. From here, the boat will transport us to the end of the historic route. You can look forward to a nice local dinner in the evening, in our modern cabins at Filefjellstuene.

DAY 5: the kings' road

Today's adventure takes us to the Kings' road. The Kings Road was awarded the EU prize for Cultural Heritage in 2017, and it is a beautiful hiking terrain. Though the historic route in the national park has come to an end, the history is not over yet. The massive stone walls along the route were hand built by thousands of workers, forming the main road between Oslo and Bergen at the beginning of the 19th Century. During the day, you will also visit the stave church of Borgund.  In the evening, we head back to our accommodation at Filefjellstuene.

DAY 6: traditional landscape and old farms

After a healthy breakfast, we will visit the beautiful valley of Utladalen. Our transportation goes directly from our accommodation, and from Utladalen, we will hike to Avdal, an old farm situated on the hillsides. In the valley, you will find some of the most impressive waterfalls in Norway, and the day is spent hiking and exploring the fairytale-like landscape. In the evening, we are picked up and driven back to our last night at Filefjellstuene.

DAY 7: a beautiful fjord view

The first part of the day you will be driving on one of Norway's national Scenic Routes. Along with selected roads in Norway, natural wonders are amplified by art, design and architecture – taking you closer to nature in new and surprising ways – and Stegastein is one of the most iconic viewpoints. From here, you have a beautiful view of the UNESCO site Nærøyfjorden.

Our hiking goal for the day is the mountain Prest (1478 meters above sea level). Some parts of the trail might feel exposed, but we guarantee that the experience on the top is worth it. From here you will have a perfect view of the large fjord landscape. Our accommodation for the night is Vangsgaarden, a restored farm from the 1750’s. Through hard work, the owners have maintained the authenticity of the buildings, and it has small lovely gardens surrounding it.

DAY 8: the worlds most beautiful train ride

Though it is our last day of this week-long adventure tour, it is not completely over yet. A short ride from our hotel is the famous Flåmsbanen; many people consider the old ride the most beautiful journey in the whole world. You can choose to end your adventure in both Bergen and Oslo, as the train very well connected to both destinations. Otherwise, you can also choose to spend some more days by the Norwegian Fjords.

Take a good look at this list, and make sure you bring everything you need. We encourage you to use what you have for this trip, and purchase items if youre missing something important on the list below. We have divided the gear list into three categories:

1) Required: If you do not own this gear, you must acquire it for your trip.

2) Recommended: Gear we suggest to be comfortable, but it is not imperative.

3) Optional: Fun, additional luxuries.

Layering is extremely important in a variable climate like Norway. This list will guide you through the essentials. Remember the Norwegian saying "There is no bad weather, only bad gear", and prepare appropriately for any weather. You can read about weather where youre traveling here.

The video below is for SUMMER gear, despite the snow in the background. Welcome to Norway!

Please contact us at [email protected] if you have any questions.

We always recommend wool in the Norwegian Mountains, but if you already have synthetic layers and don't want to buy new ones, synthetic is okay.

Wool long-sleeved top and bottom.

MID-LAYER A medium thickness wool or fleece top.

A warm jacket for breaks and before after hiking. We recommend a puffy jacket with down or synthetic. Something equivalant in warmth is also okay.

Gore-Tex or similar is mandatory. Extrememly important in Norwegian climate. The jacket must be waterproof, have a hood, and make sure you don’t get wet even if it rains all day. We recommend jackets with pit zips for ventilation.

Hiking pants comfortable for all day wear. Should fit your long underwear beneathe and fit under your rain shell pants if you choose to bring some. Zip off into shorts or an additional pair of shorts is option.

Bring 1-2 shirts for daily hiking.

1 thin pair of gloves to protect your hands. 1 pair of over mittens for additional warmth.

1 sun hat, 1 warm hat.

2-4 pairs, we recommend wool, above the ankle, in your preferred thickness. If your footwear is not waterproof consider a gortex sock option.

Bring footwear you know fits you and is comfortable. Trails can be wet and rocky. We recommend waterproof hiking boots.

Daypack for warm layers, food, snacks, water and needed items. 20-40 liters.

UV rated, we recommend a strap to keep them in place and so they don't get lost.

Make sure the Chapstick has UV rated sunscreen in it.

2 liter capacity.

Personal basics: shampoo, conditioner, toothbrush, toothpaste, hairbrush, etc...

Make sure you bring any personal meds you need on your trip, and ensure the Hvitserk office is updated on your allergies or needs.

We highly recommend bringing wool underwear and bra for hiking. No cotton.

We recommend having a water proof layer for your legs in case the weather is cold and rainy. You will enjoy the hiking more when warm and comfortable.

A layer to protect your neck or face.

We recommend a thermos for hot drinks to have with you all day.

A bathing suit and small towel if you would like to swim, hottub or sauna depending on your trip.

Most guests prefer hiking with poles. Helps with challenging terrain and to maintain energy over long days.

Important item to always have in your pack. Emergency back up and useful for long days.

If you have certain hiking aids specific to you: i.e. blister care or ibuprofen, etc...

Its important to be present while hiking, but also a great joy to bring some snapshots home with you for memory lane.

A reminder to bring a set of clothes for transfers, relaxing in the evenings, and non-hiking time. An extra, dry pair of shoes is recommended for after and before hiking.

If you need it for the bathroom or lunch.

If you have a bathroom emergency while hiking. We use "pack it in pack it out" ethics, so you will need to carry out your used items and throw them away later.

If youre a light sleeper.

In order to take notes and write about the trip.

Chocolate, nuts or energy bars if there is something particular you enjoy eating. You will have the opportunity to buy snacks on your trip.
