Want to spend a week to experience the Norwegian fjords like a Norwegian? Hiking, biking and kayaking is the ultimate way of doing it!

With kayaks, mountain bikes and hiking boots, you will get to experience fjords and waterfalls in the land of the midnight sun. We gather up at Finse on the Hardangervidda mountain plateau, the highest-altitude station on the famous railway between Oslo and Bergen, and end the tour at Flam in the famous Sognefjorden. 

Surrounded by mountainous wilderness and national parks we will hike on the glaciers of Hardangerjøkulen, and cycle the famous Navvies' Road (Rallarvegen). Through world-class natural scenery, we will cycle a 1,700-metre descent down from the mountain to Flam by the Sognefjord.

Then a different view and experience await us, as we kayak on the clear water of the fjords. We go from one beautiful place to the next, passing substantial, impressive waterfalls, isolated villages and wild nature. The narrow Nærøyfjord is a branch of the massive Sognefjord, and this is where we go on an overnight kayak tour. The fjord is on UNESCO's world heritage list. The 18-kilometre-long (11 miles) fjord is up to 500 meters (1,600 ft.) deep in some parts and only 250 meters (820ft.) wide at the narrowest. Widely famous for being one of the world's most beautiful and dramatic fjords. Last but not least; With a truly magnificent view of the fjords, you get to experience real western Norwegian landscape by foot  as we hike the mountain Prest. See the beautiful fjords from above, the breath-taking landscape will marvel you. 

The first two nights we stay in a comfortable mountain hotel, one night in a guesthouse by the fjord, then we go deeper into nature and sleep in cozy tents so that we can get connect with the Norwegian landscape, and then back to the guesthouse for our last dinner together.

Difficulty

Level 3 out of 5. Please read more about our level of difficulty here. Good fitness and some hiking and biking experience with a good attitude will also prepare you for this trip. You do not need to have kayaking experience. 

What to bring?

Have a look at the full equipment list by clicking "Equipment list" in the menu above. You can leave your luggage in the car or at the accommodation each day, so when hiking, you only have to carry what you need for the day. Camping gear will be provided for you.

How to get there?

We meet at Finse, the highest-altitude station on the Bergen Railway, the railway line between Oslo and Bergen. Finse is easily accessible from both cities with several daily departures. After 5 hours from Oslo, or 2.5 hours from Bergen, the train will stop at an altitude of 1,222 meters, on top of the vast Hardangervidda mountain plateau.

Accommodation

We stay in unique and welcoming accommodations within the area. If you are traveling alone, you will share a same-sex twin room. If you would like a single room, please request this directly for a single, additional payment of 4000 NOK. Most nights we will stay in en-suite rooms, but not all. If you want a single room we can't guarantee en-suite room each day. 

Baggage

Due to limited space in the minibus, we ask that you bring one piece of luggage (we recommend a duffel bag, which is easier than a rolling bag to transport on this tour) with your clothes, toiletries and items necessary for when we are not hiking. We require you bring a day pack (hip belt strongly recommended) to use when hiking for food, water, cameras and layers.

Insurance

You need a travel and health insurance, which also includes transportation back to your country. Remember to bring your insurance card/information. 

Languages

The guide will speak English.

  • Transportation to the meeting point at Finse. We are happy to assist you with booking the train tickets from either Oslo or Bergen to Finse if needed.

Meeting at Finse

We meet at Finse, the highest-altitude station on the Bergen Railway, the railway line between Oslo and Bergen. Finse is easily accessible from both cities with several daily departures. After 5 hours from Oslo, or 2.5 hours from Bergen, the train will stop at an altitude of 1,222 meters, on top of the vast Hardangervidda mountain plateau.

We meet at Finse at 1:30 p.m., after the morning train from Oslo and Bergen has arrived. After getting in order at our room in the Hotel situated right by the train station, we do a 2-3 hours hike to Jomfrunuten (1.471 meters) to get to know each other and the Norwegian nature. After the hike, we have a local and delicious dinner together and talk about the next day’s adventures.

Glacier Walk on Hardangerjøkulen

Hardangerjøkulen is one of Norway's biggest glaciers. After eating a healthy breakfast and packing our lunch at the hotel, we set off hiking  to the glacier. The hike itself takes about two-hours on a small trail each way, and offers panoramic views toe the area surrounding us. We will cross a couple of small rivers on the way, which makes ut feel even closer to nature. Glaciers are beautiful and rough, and our highly skilled guides will assist us in equipping ourselves with crampons, helmets, harnesses, ice axes and rope, to ensure the safety of our glacier hiking. Together we will explore this spectacular landscape of snow and ice and discover both deep crevasses and interesting historical treats. Hvitserk has all the specialised equipment required, and our guides are highly skilled and have experience from mountain terrain all over the world; they stand ready to teach participants how to conduct themselves safely on the magical blue ice. In the evening, we will have a three-course dinner at our accommodation.

Cycling the Navvies' Road

The Navvies' Road was built at the same time as the Bergen Railway, just over a 100 years ago. Today, the trip along the traffic-free construction road is Norways most famous cycling trip. this spectacular mountain bike ride is Norway's most famous cycling trip, and consists of sections with gravel, mountian biking terrain and some paved road. By bike, we pass the Hardangerjøkulen glacier and follow the changing landscape as we pass mountain lakes, majestic waterfalls and continue down a descent of 1,700 metres to Flam, at the head of an arm of Sognefjorden. On the way down we will find a nice spot to enjoy our packed lunch, have a rest and take som pictures. The last part of the tour is along the famous Flam Railway, considered as one of the most beautiful rail journeys in the world. In Flam we leave our rental bikes and do a short transfer to the small and cosy town called Aurland. Here we will stay in a rustic guesthouse by the fjord and enjoy our dinner in a social atmosphere.

In some cases, we will have too much snow at the start of our biking tour. In such a scenario we take the train in the first part, then bike the last part from Hallingskeid to Flåm(1200m descent).

Kayaking Adventure on the Fjord

An overnight kayak adventure awaits us on the narrow Nærøyfjord! We explore the beautiful fjord kayaking in safe, stable double kayaks. The two-day adventure tour takes us from Flam out the Aurlandsfjord and the full length of the UNESCO-listed Nærøyfjord. Passing through the landscape that has been carved out by glaciers, watching the waterfalls dive off the steep mountainsides. If we are lucky, it is possible that we spot some seals, eagles, otters or porpoises on our way.

Today you will also paddle to the little village of Undredal, which is home to around 70 people and 500 goats. The tiny place is known for its production of goat's cheese, and if we have time, we will sample some of the traditional Norwegian cheese. We will spend the night in tents. All necessary equipment is included (also wetsuits and waterproof pack bags). If you dont have your own sleeping bag and mat, it is possible to rent. On day 5 we will go back to Aurland after the kayaking and have our farewell dinner together.

Hike Prest Mountain and End of Trip

Today we will get the opportunity to see the Aurlandsfjord from above! After breakfast we will drive up the steep mountainside towards our hiking goal for the day, the mountain Prest (1363 meters above sea level). Some parts of the trail might feel exposed, but we guarantee that the experience on the top is worth it. The view is nothing but spectactular and in clear weather we will be able to see the mountain tops and glaciers around us, we will see how the National tourist road rolls further over the mountain, and take a peek straight the in the fjords - at the same time!

After the hike, we will go our separate ways. The trip ends in time for the last connection with Flam Railway to Oslo, Bergen and Voss. Flam Railway is one of Europes most famous railway lines. It is also possible to travel to Bergen by boat. Please contact us if you need help or tips after the group tour.

Equipment List

Take a good look at this list, and make sure you bring everything you need. We encourage you to use what you have for this trip, and purchase items if you're missing something important on the list below. We have divided the gear list into three categories:

  1. Required: If you do not own this gear, you must acquire it for your trip.
  2. Recommended: Gear we suggest to be comfortable, but it is not imperative.
  3. Optional: Fun, additional luxuries.  

Layering is extremely important in a variable climate like Norway. This list will guide you through the essentials. Remember the Norwegian saying "There is no bad weather, only bad gear", and prepare appropriately for any weather. You can read about the weather where you're traveling here.

We always recommend wool in the Norwegian Mountains, but if you already have synthetic layers and don't want to buy new ones, synthetic is okay. 

Required:

BASE LAYER

Wool long-sleeved top and bottom.

MID-LAYER
A medium thickness wool or fleece top.

INSULATED JACKET

A warm jacket for breaks and before after hiking. We recommend a puffy jacket with down or synthetic. Something equivalant in warmth is also okay.

WATERPROOF SHELL PANTS

We strongly recommend having a water proof layer for your legs in case the weather is cold and rainy. You will enjoy the hiking more when warm and comfortable.

SHELL / RAIN JACKET

Gore-Tex or similar is mandatory. Extrememly important in Norwegian climate. The jacket must be waterproof, have a hood, and make sure you don’t get wet even if it rains all day. We recommend jackets with pit zips for ventilation. 

HIKING PANTS

Hiking pants comfortable for all day wear. Should fit your long underwear beneathe and fit under your rain shell pants if you choose to bring some. Zip off into shorts or an additional pair of shorts is option. 

HIKING SHIRT

Bring 1-2 shirts for daily hiking. 

GLOVES / MITTENS

1 thin pair of gloves to protect your hands. 1 pair of over mittens for additional warmth.

HATS

1 sun hat, 1 warm hat.

HIKING SOCKS

2-4 pairs, we recommend wool, above the ankle, in your preferred thickness. If your footwear is not waterproof consider a gortex sock option.

HIKING SHOES

Bring footwear you know fits you and is comfortable. Trails can be wet and rocky. We recommend waterproof hiking boots. 

BACKPACK

Daypack for warm layers, food, snacks, water and needed items. 20-40 liters.

SUNGLASSES

UV rated, we recommend a strap to keep them in place and so they don't get lost.

SUNSCREEN / CHAPSTICK

Make sure the Chapstick has UV rated sunscreen in it. 

WATER BOTTLE / CAMELBACK

2 liter capacity. 

TOILETRIES

Personal basics: shampoo, conditioner, toothbrush, toothpaste, hairbrush, etc...

PERSONAL MEDICATIONS

Make sure you bring any personal meds you need on your trip, and ensure the Hvitserk office is updated on your allergies or needs. 

Recommended:

WOOL UNDERWEAR

We highly recommend bringing wool underwear and bra for hiking. No cotton.

SCARF OR BUFF

A layer to protect your neck or face. 

THERMOS

We recommend a thermos for hot drinks to have with you all day.

SWIMWEAR

A bathing suit and small towel if you would like to swim, hot tub or sauna depending on your trip. 

TREKKING POLES

Most guests prefer hiking with poles. Helps with challenging terrain and to maintain energy over long days. 

HEADLAMP

Important item to always have in your pack. Emergency back up and useful for long days. 

FIRST AID KIT

If you have certain hiking aids specific to you: i.e. blister care or ibuprofen, etc...

CAMERA

Its important to be present while hiking, but also a great joy to bring some snapshots home with you for memory lane. 

CASUAL CLOTHES

A reminder to bring a set of clothes for transfers, relaxing in the evenings, and non-hiking time. An extra, dry pair of shoes is recommended for after and before hiking.

If you need it for the bathroom or lunch. 

WET WIPE OR TOILET PAPER

If you have a bathroom emergency while hiking. We use "pack it in pack it out" ethics, so you will need to carry out your used items and throw them away later.

EAR PLUGS

If youre a light sleeper.

JOURNAL

In order to take notes and write about the trip.

SNACKS

Chocolate, nuts or energy bars if there is something particular you enjoy eating. You will have the opportunity to buy snacks on your trip.

SLEEPING MASK

To cover your eyes when sleeping in 24 hour light. You can aslo use your buff.

Bed linens and towels are included all nights.  All the equipment you need for the glacier hike on day three is also included, also hiking boots that are compatible with crampons.
