Trekking Tour Around the Norwegian Fjord Hjørundfjorden

Join us this summer for a fantastic hike around one of Norway's most beautiful fjords. The hike around the Norwegian Fjord is a trekking tour in beautiful scenery with magnificent views of the sea and fjord. We will stay in unique and charming accommodations during this Adventure Tour.

Thank you Hvitserk for a wonderful week hiking in Hjorundfjord! It was a wonderful experience. I loved the variety of accommodations, the variety, time and challenge in all of the hikes!— Guest in 2017

On this hike around one of Norway's beautiful fjords, we will explore the exceptionally beautiful mountain scenery surrounding the Norwegian Fjord Hjørundfjord in Sunnmøre. It offers spectacular views and opportunities to get off the beaten track. We trek from village to village, carrying light backpacks. During the tour, we will make our way up summits, and explore local destinations and valleys en route.

Every night we stay in high-quality, authentic accommodations. You can look forward to staying in places such as the beautiful Brosundet Hotel in Ålesund and the historic Hotel Union Øye. The route's lowest point is the shore down by the fjord, and the highest point is the 1,564-metre-high mountain of Slogen. One of the most spectacular summits in the "Alps of Sunnmøre"!

The scenery along this hiking tour is magnificent, and if you want to experience the Norwegian mountain landscape at its absolute best, this is an excellent alternative. On this hiking tour, we also visit the city of Ålesund. The place is a famous seaport, and it is widely known for its concentration of Art Nouveau architecture. Ålesund is where the tour starts and the airport offers good connections (direct flights) to several foreign cities (KLM, among others, operates daily flights). Norwegian and SAS also operate several daily flights to Oslo. It is also possible to fly directly from Oslo to Ørsta, near the Hjørundfjord (Widerøe).

If you have the time, we recommend that you plan an extra day in Oslo before or after the tour. Oslo is among Lonely Planet's top 10 cities on their Best in travel 2018 list

You can book the Adventure Tour in the menu to the right; please let us know if you have any questions. You can contact us at [email protected]

DAY 1: Arrival in the Art Nouveau Town of Ålesund

Ålesund is known for its Art Nouveau architecture and incredible hiking opportunities. The town harbours the world-known sea voyage Hurtigruten Coastal Express on a daily basis. After arriving in Ålesund, you meet the guide and the rest of the group in the evening for a brief at 7 pm at the hotel. The group will then go to a nice restaurant in the city to have dinner together.

Day 2: Spectacular hiking in photographic scenery

Time to hike in some photographic scenery! You may leave some luggage at the hotel in Ålesund since we will return to the same hotel at the end of the trip. From Ålesund, we travel by bus and ferry for about one hour to the west side of the Hjørundfjord. From here we hike through the Molladalen valley. Molladalen is a popular hiking area, and very often characterised as Sunnmøre's answer to Chamonix. The highest point today is Grønetinden (1014 meters), we return from the spectacular view before we make our way down towards Ytre Standal. By the lovely shore of Standal, we will be picked up by boat and transported a few minutes to the tiny village of Trandal. It is only possible to reach this place by a small local ferry, or by private boat.

Dinner is served at the only restaurant situated here.

Day 3: hiking off the beaten track

After a healthy breakfast, and the obligatory lunch packing, we head out for the mountains. We start the day taking the boat back to Ytre Standal. Today's hike is a bit shorter than yesterday. The valley of Kvandalen offers us some off-piste terrain and enjoyable hiking terrain. The first half of the day you will hike in bright green grass and grazing sheep that freely enjoy their valley. It is varied terrain, and cliffs and spectacular blue-white glaciers dominate our view. Our goal for today is Standaleidet, where we will spend the night in well equipped private cabins. This is a popular place for locals to start their hiking and ski touring trips.

Day 4: down to the fjords

We start the day hiking over a mountain pass. An impressive fjord view follows us down to the fjord! On the route, we cross the picturesque Nøvedalen valley, before we follow the deep Litledalen valley down to our destination. Along the route, you will have the opportunity to see the local grazing sheep, enjoy the beautiful flowers, and the green forest track through the deep Litledalen valley. In the little village of Sæbø, we stay in a lovely hotel at the edge of the fjord. Here we will enjoy a delicious dinner and have the opportunity to enjoy the evening by the fjord.

Day 5: hiking to Saksa, and the 19th century

After a healthy breakfast at the hotel, the ferry will take us across the fjord. From the deck, you will have a great view of today's mountain. Saksa (1073 meters) is often used by local mountaineering enthusiasts, probably because of the spectacular views and fun hiking terrain. When we return from the summit, our transport will take us to the Historical Hotel of Union Øye. The old hotel has a long history, and it has been a favourite venue for royalties, writers, climbers, and lovers for generations. A stay at this hotel will be like being transported back in time and will give us a unique experience to get to know the area and its history. We have a nice three-course dinner at the hotel and spend the night here.

Day 6: READY to hike SLOGEN

We enjoy a relaxing morning and a delicious breakfast at Hotel Union Øye. Nice and fed we drive a short distance to the foot of Slogen (1564 meters), the highest point of our trip. This mountain has often been mentioned a favourite among the visitors of Hjørundfjord. From the entrance of the hotel, we start to hike towards the Norwegian Trekking Associations cabin, Patchellhytta. If the weather is nice, and we are not too tired, we make our way up to the top of Slogen the very same day. With its pyramid-shaped summit, the mountain is a magnificent sight, and there is a fantastic view from the top across great swathes of Sunnmøre. The trek from Patchellhytta, to the summit, and back again will take us about 3-4 hours depending on the weather conditions.

In case yesterday's weather did not allow us to climb Slogen, we will start the day by scrambling the spectacular 1,564 meters. We will return from the mountain and down to Stranda, by Storfjorden. From here our transportation goes back to Ålesund. Some of you would probably like a shower, and we have the opportunity to do this at the hotel before summing up with a delicious farewell dinner in the city.

We eat breakfast together at the hotel, and maybe you will have some time to look around in Ålesund. It is always sad to say goodbye to new friends, but we hope that you have time to do some reflection on the bus trip back to the Ålesund airport.

Take a good look at this list, and make sure you bring everything you need. We encourage you to use what you have for this trip, and purchase items if youre missing something important on the list below. We have divided the gear list into three categories:

1) Required: If you do not own this gear, you must acquire it for your trip.

2) Recommended: Gear we suggest to be comfortable, but it is not imperative.

3) Optional: Fun, additional luxuries.

Layering is extremely important in a variable climate like Norway. This list will guide you through the essentials. Remember the Norwegian saying "There is no bad weather, only bad gear", and prepare appropriately for any weather. You can read about weather where youre traveling here.

The video below is for SUMMER gear, despite the snow in the background. Welcome to Norway!

Please contact us at [email protected] if you have any questions.

We always recommend wool in the Norwegian Mountains, but if you already have synthetic layers and don't want to buy new ones, synthetic is okay.

Wool long-sleeved top and bottom.

MID-LAYER A medium thickness wool or fleece top.

A warm jacket for breaks and before after hiking. We recommend a puffy jacket with down or synthetic. Something equivalant in warmth is also okay.

Gore-Tex or similar is mandatory. Extrememly important in Norwegian climate. The jacket must be waterproof, have a hood, and make sure you don’t get wet even if it rains all day. We recommend jackets with pit zips for ventilation.

Hiking pants comfortable for all day wear. Should fit your long underwear beneathe and fit under your rain shell pants if you choose to bring some. Zip off into shorts or an additional pair of shorts is option.

Bring 1-2 shirts for daily hiking.

1 thin pair of gloves to protect your hands. 1 pair of over mittens for additional warmth.

1 sun hat, 1 warm hat.

2-4 pairs, we recommend wool, above the ankle, in your preferred thickness. If your footwear is not waterproof consider a gortex sock option.

Bring footwear you know fits you and is comfortable. Trails can be wet and rocky. We recommend waterproof hiking boots.

Daypack for warm layers, food, snacks, water and needed items. 20-40 liters.

UV rated, we recommend a strap to keep them in place and so they don't get lost.

Make sure the Chapstick has UV rated sunscreen in it.

2 liter capacity.

Personal basics: shampoo, conditioner, toothbrush, toothpaste, hairbrush, etc...

Make sure you bring any personal meds you need on your trip, and ensure the Hvitserk office is updated on your allergies or needs.

We highly recommend bringing wool underwear and bra for hiking. No cotton.

We recommend having a water proof layer for your legs in case the weather is cold and rainy. You will enjoy the hiking more when warm and comfortable.

A layer to protect your neck or face.

We recommend a thermos for hot drinks to have with you all day.

A bathing suit and small towel if you would like to swim, hottub or sauna depending on your trip.

Most guests prefer hiking with poles. Helps with challenging terrain and to maintain energy over long days.

Important item to always have in your pack. Emergency back up and useful for long days.

If you have certain hiking aids specific to you: i.e. blister care or ibuprofen, etc...

Its important to be present while hiking, but also a great joy to bring some snapshots home with you for memory lane.

A reminder to bring a set of clothes for transfers, relaxing in the evenings, and non-hiking time. An extra, dry pair of shoes is recommended for after and before hiking.

If you need it for the bathroom or lunch.

If you have a bathroom emergency while hiking. We use "pack it in pack it out" ethics, so you will need to carry out your used items and throw them away later.

If youre a light sleeper.

In order to take notes and write about the trip.

Chocolate, nuts or energy bars if there is something particular you enjoy eating. You will have the opportunity to buy snacks on your trip.

To cover your eyes when sleeping in 24 hour light. You can aslo use your buff.
